In 2004 the Irish Red and White Setter Club embarked on a comprehensive Health Programme for the breed, in which around 50 dogs have participated so far. The Health Programme was devised by Finnbar Heslin BVM, and is innovative in that it takes a wholistic approach to the dog, rather than focussing only on genetic defects and testing. The first stage was a thorough general clinical examination , followed by CLAD testing, eye testing and hip scoring under the BVA scheme. DNA testing for von Willebrands Disease will be the next stage of the programme
